Description
25 and 26 Buttermarket are two shops with storage above, originally a house, dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with an early 19th-century front. The building is timber-framed and rendered, topped with a slate roof featuring a paired modillion eaves cornice. It has three windows, which are small-paned sashes in flush cased frames, and two 20th-century shop fronts on the ground floor.
Inside, No. 25 boasts a remarkable original plaster ceiling from the late 16th or early 17th century, which is in good condition. The ceiling features heavily moulded panels with pendant bosses adorned with acanthus-leaf decoration at their intersections, along with fleur-de-lys and sprays of oak leaves and vines in low relief. Additionally, two wall paintings dated to around 1610 were discovered on a chimney-breast in 1956; one was restored and temporarily placed within the building until it was removed during extensive renovations in the 1980s.
