Description
27, 27A, and 27B Buttermarket is a house and shop, now comprising two shops with offices above. The building features an early 19th-century front but has a core dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. It is constructed from timber framing and rendered, topped with a slate roof.
The exterior stands three storeys tall and has a five-window range. The windows are small-paned sashes in flush cased frames, with glazing bars only on the upper sashes. Each window is adorned with wood architraves and pediments supported by console brackets. The four first-storey windows lead out to wrought-iron balconies. The ground storey has two 20th-century shop fronts. At the rear, there is a long timber-framed range with at least five bays, positioned at right angles to the front, which was formerly the Half Moon Inn. This rear section is mostly surrounded by 20th-century extensions, although part of the jetty along the south side remains visible, showing exposed joist ends. Additional extensions include one with an early 19th-century mansard roof, contributing to the complexity of the rear elevation.
Inside, the front range consists of two cells with an internal chimney stack, and some timbers are partially exposed on the first storey. The room on the left features an unusual fireplace in the Adam style, enhanced by a later overmantel. The right room has a main beam with shallow roll-mouldings. The top storey is a 19th-century addition. Access to the ground storey of the jettied rear range is through No.27A, while the upper storey is accessed from the rear of No.27. The ground-storey ceiling displays exposed timbers, with hollow and roll-mouldings on the main beams and cornice, and roll-mouldings on the joists. The upper storey features one chamfered and cambered tie-beam and a main post with a long arched brace, while the rest of the frame is covered. The roof has been replaced in the 20th century.
