Description

No. 14 Brentgovel Street, which includes No. 46 Well Street, is a building that originally comprised two houses and shops, now functioning as a single shop with living accommodation above. It dates from the early to mid 19th century and is constructed of white brick with a slate roof that features a wide eaves overhang and a hipped design at the corner.

The building stands three storeys high with a cellar and is located on a corner site, marking the end of the row on the east side of Well Street. The corner is splayed and has blocked window openings on the first and second storeys. The ground storey has a shop entrance featuring a half-glazed 20th-century door with two leaves, set within a plain semicircular-arched surround that has plain reveals and a blank fanlight above.

The Brentgovel Street façade displays a three-window range: the outer windows on the first storey are 16-pane sashes with flat gauged arches and projecting stone sills, while the centre window has 12 panes. The second storey windows consist of an 8-pane and a 6-pane sash, both with vertical glazing bars. On the ground storey, there are two early 19th-century shop windows with pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice; the left window has fixed clear glass, while the right features a tripartite sash with a 12-pane middle window. A central doorway has a plain semicircular brick arch, a blank fanlight, and a blocked two-panel door.

The return front to Well Street includes a similar early 19th-century shop window with fixed clear glass, and sash windows that mirror those on the Brentgovel Street front, with 16 panes on the first storey and 8 panes on the second. There is also a six-panel door with raised fielded panels, set in a plain semicircular-arched brick surround with a blank fanlight above. The interior has not been inspected.
