Description
7 and 9 Garland Street are a pair of houses that were once part of a row of six almshouses. They were rebuilt in 1612 on the site of four earlier almshouses that were destroyed in a fire in 1608. The buildings are timber-framed and rendered, with plain tiled roofs.
The exterior features two storeys and a four-window range, including small-paned two-light casements and one additional 20th-century window. On the ground floor, there are three windows: two larger two-light small-paned casements for No. 7 and one four-light early 20th-century window with a transom for No. 9. There are three doors present. No. 7 has two red brick chimney stacks on the rear wall, while No. 9 includes a small lean-to extension, an inserted internal chimney stack, and the remains of an older end stack on the north side.
Inside, a few plain timbers are exposed. No. 7 features an open fireplace with a plain timber lintel. The ground floor has chamfered main beams, later partition walls, and an original studded partition above tie-beam level within the roof space, which retains some old wattle-and-daub infill.
