Description
The King's Arms Public House is a public house located on Brentgovel Street in Bury St Edmunds. It dates back to the 17th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. The building features a timber-framed structure that is encased in 19th-century brick, which is now painted. The roof is covered with old plain tiles.
The exterior of the building is two storeys high and includes cellars, with a T-shaped layout and a long rear range. On the upper storey, there are three sash windows, each with a single vertical bar in the lights, set in heavy cased frames with shallow reveals, flat cement arches, and stone sills. The ground storey has three similar but larger windows and one narrower sash window without glazing bars. There are two doorways with moulded surrounds that have half-glazed double doors. The west gable features pierced and fluted barge-boards. The rear range is rendered and has a shallow-pitched roof.
Inside, the cellars extend beneath the entire rear range. The main beams and wall plates are exposed on the upper storey of the front range. The rear range is divided into two sections, with the half adjoining the front originally being lower. The lower wall plate is visible along the east wall, showing a barefaced dovetail halving for a former tie-beam.
