Description
The Stable Block to Number 8 is a former stable building, dating from around 1700, which has been partly converted into offices and a repair workshop. The front wall is made of red brick laid in English Bond with dark headers, while the rear is constructed of white brick and the south gable end is rendered. The roof is covered with old plain tiles, hipped at the north end and gabled at the south.
This two-storey building has seven bays and features a raised band between the storeys. On the upper storey, there are four original cross windows with square leaded panes. At the north end, two windows have been replaced with late 19th-century sash windows that have vertical glazing bars in flush frames. In the fifth bay from the south, a large clock, originally from a tower at the former Ousden Hall, has replaced a window; this clock is topped with a small gabled and bracketed roof.
On the ground storey, all original openings have been blocked or altered, but two early 19th-century windows with diamond leading and pointed Gothick heads remain. There is also a blocked dormer with a hipped roof on the north slope of the roof, and one original three-light window with square leaded panes and pintle hinges can be found on the north ground storey.
Inside, the building has been mainly modernised, but the bay at the north end remains unrestored, showcasing exposed timbering on the ground storey. This includes a large chamfered main beam with curved stops and joists set on edge. The internal chimney stack features an open fireplace with a plain timber lintel.
