Description

10 Angel Hill is a house with a core dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, and an exterior from the early 19th century. It is constructed of white brick with a slate roof and features a mutule eaves soffit, with some timber-framed fragments visible inside. The building has three storeys and a cellar, with a three-window range consisting of sashes that have single vertical glazing bars set in plain reveals, complemented by cement flat arches and raised keystones. A cement band is present at the window-sill level of the first storey. The 19th-century door surround includes panelled pilasters and a small cornice on stub brackets. A later rear extension features two flat-headed dormers on the roof slope, each with two-light, four-paned casement windows. Inside, there is an exposed chamfered main beam from around 1600 in the front range. The early 19th-century staircase, originally free-standing but now against the west wall, has slender turned balusters on each side and a plain ramped handrail, with a similar flight leading to the second storey. The principal room on the first storey boasts a moulded plaster cornice and casing around the main beam. In the 19th century, this house served as a girls' boarding school. A bay to the left of the entrance door was demolished after being severely damaged by a fire that destroyed the adjoining house to the west in 1912.
