Description
Numbers 13 and 14 are a pair of early 19th-century houses located on Angel Hill in Bury St Edmunds. They are constructed of white brick above a rusticated stone basement and feature a slate roof with paired bracketed eaves soffit. The buildings rise three storeys and include a basement.
The exterior has a six-window range with sash windows in plain reveals, flat gauged arches, and stone sills. The first and ground storeys have 12-pane windows, while the top storey features 6-pane windows. A raised brick band runs at the sill level of the first storey. The basement has four 6-pane sash windows with segmental-arched heads.
Each house has an entrance at either end, accessed by a flight of stone steps. The recessed doors have six raised fielded panels and rectangular fanlights set in deep panelled reveals. The door surrounds feature engaged fluted columns and a pediment with a Doric frieze. The steps are adorned with cast-iron railings that have wreathed handrails and shaped balusters, with two on each side that include a foot-scraper.
In front, there is an attached dwarf wall with low cast-iron railings; No. 13 has ornate openwork panels between arrow-headed balusters, while No. 14 has simpler replacements. At the rear, there is a small older range shared between the two houses, featuring an old plaintiled roof and built on a foundation wall of rough stone blocks.
Inside, No. 14 was fully restored in 1989 and includes a good geometric staircase that rises the full height of the house, with wide treads, bracketed open strings, and a plain wreathed handrail. The original stick balusters were replaced during the restoration with turned balusters. The ground storey windows have internal panelled shutters. No. 13 was not inspected.
