Description
No. 18 Angel Hill is an early 19th-century office building, originally a house, situated on an older site in Bury St Edmunds. The building is constructed of white brick and features a slate roof with a paired modillion eaves soffit and a plain brick bedmould.
The exterior consists of three storeys and cellars, with a four-window range facing Angel Hill. The windows are 12-pane sashes set in deep reveals with stone sills and flat gauged arches on the first and second storeys. The ground storey windows have semicircular arched heads and diminished side lights. The entrance features a plain pilastered Ionic doorcase, a 20th-century door, and a rectangular fanlight. The Northgate frontage has a seven-window range, all 12-pane sashes in deep reveals with stone sills and flat gauged arches, arranged in a pattern of 1:2:2:2 and divided by plain pilasters with Tuscan capitals. There are two doorways in a similar style to the Angel Hill entrance, also with 20th-century doors.
The interior does not contain any earlier features, as both the cellars and the entire building date from the early 19th century. Nos. 1 to 3 Northgate Street are included in the listing.
