Description
No. 36 Churchgate Street is a house that has been converted into offices, located in Bury St Edmunds. It was built around 1810 to 1820 and is constructed of red brick, featuring a plain parapet and a moulded stucco cornice, topped with black glazed pantiles. The building stands three storeys tall and has a return front to Athenaeum Lane.
The exterior has a two-window range, with 12-pane sash windows on the first storey and 6-pane sash windows on the second storey, all set in flush cased frames with flat gauged brick arches. The entrance features a doorcase with reeded half-round engaged columns, a plain pediment, and a cornice with mutules on the soffit. Above the entrance is a rectangular fanlight with decorative glazing, leading to a six-panel door, likely from the Edwardian period, which has four sunk panels and two flush bottom panels. There are two plain chimney-stacks located internally on the east wall, each with high narrow rectangular shafts topped by four chimney-pots.
Inside, there is a through passage that includes a 20th-century replacement rear door, which has an original fanlight that matches the one above the entrance. The staircase features stick balusters and a ramped wreathed handrail. Internal shutters with sunk panels are present, and the fireplace in the ground-storey room has a decorated eared architrave. Both rooms on the first storey have reeded fireplace surrounds that are styled similarly to the entrance doorway.
