Description
No. 35 Churchgate Street is a house that has been converted into offices. It dates from the mid-18th century and has a small early 17th-century rear wing along Angel Lane. The building is constructed of red brick and features a plain tiled mansard roof, with a timber-framed rear section.
The exterior consists of two storeys, attics, and cellars. The facade is topped with a plain stone-capped parapet and has a wooden modillion eaves cornice. The quoins are rusticated in brick, and there is a plain brick band between the ground and first storeys. The front has five windows, which are 12-pane sashes with wooden reveals, flat gauged arches, and projecting sills. Three gabled dormers contain 2-light casement windows with a single horizontal bar in each light. The central doorway features a doorcase with plain reveals, a Gibbs architrave, and a triangular pediment, with the door itself having six raised fielded panels.
Inside, there is a rear cellar lined with old brick and re-used stone blocks, which retains the remains of an original timber ceiling. A large front cellar, partly brick vaulted, contains some stone blocks in the walls along with much later brickwork. No original features remain in the front range, but there is an Edwardian stair in Jacobean style that runs the full height of the building. The timber-framed rear section has some plain beams exposed on the ground storey.
