Description

No. 18 Colegate is a former house, now used as offices, dating from the early 18th century. The building is constructed of red brick, featuring stucco rusticated quoins and a stringcourse, with flint incorporated into part of the west wall. It has a pantile roof and stands two storeys high, plus a half-basement and attics, with a total of seven bays.

The central entrance has a doorcase with a moulded semi-circular head, flanked by two fluted composite half columns, topped with a pediment and a keystone shaped like a tern. There are five steps leading up to the entrance. The building has sash windows throughout, which include glazing bars and rubbed brick flat arches with keystones. Notably, there are two small 17th-century windows on the first floor of the west wall.

The eaves cornice is ornate, featuring modillions, and there is a central dormer gable with two sash windows, along with small flanking dormers. The roof has an unusual arrangement, with one ridge running parallel to the street line and three ridges at right angles at the rear.

Inside, there are good 18th-century details, particularly in the south-west room, which boasts a fine plaster ceiling with a central oval panel set within a guilloche frame, surrounded by a wide enclosing frame with corner rosettes.
