Description
No. 20 Colegate is a former house that is now used as an office. It dates from the early 17th century and is set back from the street, with a block that has been heightened and extended towards the street in the 18th century, as indicated by a rainwater head dated 1743. The building is constructed of red brick with flint on the rear and east walls, featuring stone quoins and pantile roofs, and has an L-shaped plan.
The east facade has two storeys and five bays, adorned with brick Corinthian pilasters. To the right side, there is a stone doorcase with attached Tuscan columns, a triglyph frieze, and a pediment. The facade features sash windows throughout, which have glazing bars and rubbed brick flat arches, topped with a parapet.
The north facade also has two storeys and two bays, with pilasters and sash windows that include glazing bars and rubbed brick flat arches, along with a parapet.
Inside, the building boasts a finely carved staircase, door surrounds, and fireplace surrounds. There is a strapwork plaster ceiling in the north ground floor room, and a 17th-century stair turret is located at the rear of the south block.
