Description

No. 20 Chamberlain Street is a former house, now used as offices, dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with a mid-19th century refacing. The building is rendered to imitate ashlar stone with stone dressings and has a slate roof, while the rear wing is constructed of rubble with a pantile roof.

The plan features an asymmetrical front range with a passage running through it, flanked by single rooms, and a staircase located to the rear right. At the back, there is a long gabled wing divided into two sections, with a coped verge at the midpoint.

The exterior is two storeys high with five bays. It has plain sash windows set in plain reveals, with exposed sash boxes on the first floor. The entrance, located in the central bay, consists of a six-panel door framed by a stone surround featuring Doric pilasters, console brackets, and a pediment hood. To the right of the entrance is a footscraper. The steep roof has a coped verge on the right side and brick stacks at each gable end. The wing includes a wide, flat-roofed dormer with two lights and some early leaded glass, along with attractive early 18th-century 12-pane sash windows.

Inside, there are various early doors, including four and six-panel fielded doors, some plank doors, and a wide plank door with angle hinges beneath a splat grille below the stair landing. There are also panelled cupboard doors, shuttered windows with panels below the sills, and some remaining stone flooring on the ground floor. The interior lacks extant fireplaces or cornices. The staircase, accessed through a two-arched opening, is a dog-leg design with a chinoiserie balustrade on the upper flight. The main roof features very regular principals, which may have been replaced in the 19th century, while the purlin is made of rough scantling. The rear wing has a narrow-span roof without collars or ties but includes very deep square purlins. The simple refenestration of the front hides an earlier, more complex structure.
