Description
No. 21 Chamberlain Street is a house in a row that has been converted into flats. It dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century, but may include earlier work at the rear. The exterior is rendered and colourwashed, with stone dressings and rubble at the rear. It features a single Roman clay tiled roof with a coped gable on the left and ashlar stone chimney stacks. The building has a symmetrical broad frontage with two gabled rear wings.
The house is two storeys high and has three wide bays. It includes a plinth, plain pilasters at the ends and between the first and second bays, a cornice, and a plain parapet. The outer bays have angled bay windows with plain sashes beneath lead bell-hip roofs, while the first floor has plain sash windows in each bay. Above the first-floor windows is a considerable stretch of plain walling, approximately one meter high. The entrance is located in the lower second bay, featuring a six-panel door with a rectangular fanlight, framed by a doorcase with Doric pilasters, a shallow entablature, and a moulded flat hood. The main ridge stack is positioned to the left of the entrance bay, and the rear wings have steep-pitched gabled roofs.
The interior has not been inspected. This property was built or refaced at the same time as the adjoining No. 23 and has unfortunately lost all of its original sash glazing bars.
