Description
No. 26 West Street is a house that has been converted into offices. It dates from the early to mid-18th century and has late 19th-century features, along with some 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed with flared headers in header bond and red brick detailing, topped with a plain-tile roof featuring a brick ridge and lateral stacks. It has an L-shaped plan and is two stories tall with a three-window range.
To the right of the center, there is a blocked carriageway that has been replaced with a shallow canted bay window. The doorway to the left of the center has a flat-arched, gauged brick head, with red brick jambs and a plank door that leads to a passage. On the left side, there is a 16-pane sash window, with similar sash windows on the first floor, all featuring gauged brick, flat-arched heads. The center window on the first floor is a dummy window. The building has a moulded cornice made of fine rubbed and gauged brick, and a stone-coped brick parapet.
To the right, there is a cross wing that was rebuilt in the late 19th century, which has 2-light casement windows on both the ground and first floors, featuring chamfered stone surrounds, with transoms on the ground floor. The attic has a 2-light casement window in barge-boarded gables, a plinth with chamfered stone coping, and a slate roof. There is also a wing at the rear right, likely from the early 19th century, which is two stories tall and has a hipped slate roof. Inside, there is a chamfered spine beam.
