Description
23 West Street is a house that has been converted into offices. It was built in the early 19th century and has undergone some alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed of gauged red brick with a slate roof and blue brick end stacks. It has a double-depth plan and stands three stories tall with a three-window range. The front features high-quality rubbed brick, highlighted by four pilaster strips that define the three bays. The central entrance has a six-panel door with panelled reveals and moulded wood surrounds, flanked by thin pilasters and a cornice. The first and second floors have blank windows in the center, while the ground and first floors feature 12-pane sash windows, and the second floor has 9-pane sashes, all with gauged brick flat-arched heads. The building has a plinth and moulded gauged brick eaves. At the rear right, there is a two-storey wing with a plain-tile roof and casement windows, one of which has small leaded panes. Inside, there is an elegant small staircase that rises in a confined space around a narrow well, featuring continuous curved flights to the first and second floors. The staircase has a ramped and wreathed mahogany handrail, stick balusters, and scrolled tread ends.
