Description

No. 27 Front Street is a house that has been converted into offices. It was built in the mid-18th century and has some alterations from the late 19th century. The building is constructed of brick with some ashlar dressings and features a slate mansard roof.

The exterior has two storeys plus an attic and consists of three bays. The windows, except for those in the attic, are sashed without glazing bars and have segmental heads. On the ground floor, there is a late 19th-century brick canted bay window with sandstone lintels. Above this, there is a brick storey band. The attic is illuminated by a single sashed flat-roofed dormer. To the right of the building, there is a timber doorcase that includes fluted pilasters, fluted brackets, an open pediment, a plain semicircular overlight, and a door with six raised and fielded panels. The building also features a modillioned gutter cornice and has chimneys on both the left and right sides.

The interior has not been inspected, but records from the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England indicate that it originally had a staircase with turned balusters with square knops, turned newels, and a moulded handrail. There is a moulded arch that separates the entrance passage from the stair hall. The ground-floor room retains an original fireplace with flanking round-headed cupboards, and there is a similar fireplace on the first floor.
