Description

No. 17 Galgate is a house that has been converted into offices. It was built around 1790 and has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is made of coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings, and it features a roof covered in stone slates with stone gable coping and a stone chimney.

The structure has three storeys and a two-window range. There is a step up to a recessed door on the right, which is set in panelled reveals and has an overlight with glazing bars. This door is framed by a painted wood doorcase with fluted pilasters and a round arch beneath a dentilled fascia and corniced head. To the left, there is a late 19th-century shop front that includes a recessed central glazed door, flanked by slender pilasters that support an entablature with an attached name board above.

On the first floor, there is a canted bay window on the left with plain sashes and a cornice. The right side and the third floor feature similar sashes with flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills, while the top windows are square and flush against the eaves. The building has a moulded eaves gutter cornice, and the roof has plain gable coping on the right side, along with a top band on the right end chimney that sits on a plinth. The interior has not been inspected.
