Description
No. 1 Queen Street is a house that has been converted into offices. It was built in the late 18th century and underwent some alterations in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar with rendered rubble on the sides and has a slate roof. It features a double-depth plan with rear wings on both the left and right sides.
The original main facade, which faces north, is two storeys high and consists of five bays. It has sashed windows that do not have glazing bars. The ground floor has been modified and now includes two large canted bay windows, each topped with a cornice and blocking course, featuring two tall lights that face forward. Between these bay windows is a central window; historical maps from 1845 indicate that there was originally a door in this location. The eaves cornice runs below the gutter, and there are chimneys on both the left and right sides of the building.
The right-hand side of the building, which faces Queen Street, has a doorway that was likely added in the late 19th century. This doorway features a stone surround with an elliptical arch and keystone, and it includes side lights and an overlight. On the first floor, there is a tripartite window with a stone surround, and above it, a small sash window. To the right of this is the three-bay facade of the rear wing.
Inside, the building contains a later 19th-century mahogany staircase with slim turned balusters.
