Description
No. 1 Queen Square is a house that now serves as a doctors' surgery. It was built in the late 18th century, altered in the 19th century, and restored around 1980. The building is made of sandstone ashlar and has a slate roof. It has a double-depth plan and features a symmetrical design with two storeys above cellars and five bays. The façade includes a cornice and a parapet with coping. The windows are sash style without glazing bars, featuring plain reveals and projecting sills. Most cellar openings are glazed.
The entrance doorway is framed by a lugged stone architrave and topped with a pediment. The overlight has glazing bars arranged in a curved intersecting design, and the door consists of six raised and fielded panels. Access to the door is via four steps with nosings and iron railings. The building has chimneys on the gables, with the left-hand chimney made of brick and the right-hand chimney rendered.
Inside, the arch between the front hall and the stair hall is supported by fluted Doric pilasters. The dogleg staircase features an open string, three turned balusters per tread, turned newels, and a ramped handrail, finishing with a curtail.
