Description

4 and 6 Queen Street is a house that now serves as a register office. It was built in the late 18th century, enlarged in the early 19th century, altered in the late 19th century, and restored in the 1970s. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar and has a slate roof. It features a double-depth plan and stands two storeys above cellars. The main facade is symmetrical with five bays, an eaves cornice beneath a timber gutter, and glazing bar sash windows with plain reveals and projecting sills. The cellar openings are currently blocked. Above the entrance, there is a cornice supported by fluted console brackets. The door consists of six raised and fielded panels topped by a glazed panel.

To the left of the main structure is an addition built with narrower courses of ashlar, which includes a two-storey canted bay window featuring glazing bar sashes in plain stone surrounds. The left-hand gable is coped, and there is a chimney on the left side of the main house. The left gable wall has a tall window with a plain stone surround and a round head that rises from the first-floor level, though its upper part is blocked. There are also blocked lunette windows near the eaves on either side. Much of the rear wall appears to have been rebuilt in the late 19th century, using stone in narrow courses and incorporating a two-storey bow.

Inside, the building has been largely altered, but it retains an archway with fluted pilaster jambs that leads to the rear stair hall. The open-string dogleg stair features three turned balusters on each tread, terminates in a curtail, and has turned newels along with a ramped handrail.
