Description

48 and 50 King Street are a pair of houses, now functioning as a house and shop, built in the mid-18th century and altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The ground floor features sandstone ashlar, while the upper sections are made of coursed dressed sandstone with ashlar dressings and raised quoins. The building has a slate roof and a double-depth, two-unit plan with rear extensions. It stands three storeys tall above cellars, with each house being single-fronted and consisting of two bays.

No. 50 has been altered at the ground floor. No. 48 features a doorway on the left with a shouldered architrave framed by narrow pilasters that end in scrolled consoles, which support brackets carved as lion-masks, along with a prominent moulded cornice. To the right, there is a shuttered cellar opening, a four-pane sashed window with a raised plain surround, and a plain band at the first floor. The upper floors of both houses have four similar windows each, along with a hollow-moulded eaves cornice. Gable chimney stacks are present. At the rear, there is a central two-storey extension with a carried-down roof that contains a staircase, and each outer bay has a two-light mullioned window on every floor. No. 48 was listed on February 18, 1970.
