Description

95 and 97 King Street is a pair of houses, now used as offices, dating from the late 18th century and altered in the 20th century. They are constructed of sandstone ashlar with ashlar dressings and have a slate roof. The buildings have a double-depth plan with a central waggon passage and rise to three storeys. The symmetrical six-bay front features three bays for each house. There are ground-floor sill bands, and in the center, a large rectangular waggon entrance is flanked by former domestic doorways that are now blocked, all with raised plain surrounds beneath a massive rectangular lintel divided into three sections. Each house has two windows at ground level with altered glazing, and three 12-pane sashed windows on each upper floor, all with raised plain surrounds, with the second-floor windows located beneath a plain eaves band. The roof has three small skylights on the front slope and a brick chimney stack on the left gable. Entrances are now located in the sides of the through passage. At the rear, flanking the central passageway, there is a very large three-stage stair window with glazing bars, and in the outer bays, a large 12-paned sashed window on each floor, all with broad raised surrounds. Inside, each house features a dogleg staircase with an open string, scrolled brackets, columnar newels, two slender turned balusters per tread, and a ramped handrail, all made of pitch pine.
