Description
A pair of houses at 9 and 11 Cable Street, dating from the late 18th century and altered around 1985. They are built with a sandstone ashlar facade featuring ashlar dressings, while the main body of the building is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble. The roof is slate-covered, with a gable chimney on the left-hand side. The houses are arranged with a double-depth plan, originally featuring a centrally-placed double doorway and a pair of rear wings.
The building has three storeys over a tall basement, with three bays per house. A sill band runs along each floor, and there is a moulded eaves cornice. The original basement windows have been blocked. The remaining windows have plain reveals, some with renewed lintels, and contain recently installed 12-pane sashes that diminish in height with each storey.
A raised doorway is accessed by a double flight of eight-nosed steps, flanked by renewed iron railings running parallel to the facade. The doorway has a pediment with a pulvinated frieze supported by three engaged Tuscan columns. The panelled doors each have three glazed panels above three raised and fielded panels, with the lower panelled portion featuring a curved pattern.
Inside, the entrance hall features an arch with fluted pilasters and moulded plaster decoration including urns and swags. A dogleg staircase has an open string, scrolled brackets, recently replaced turned balusters, and a ramped handrail.
