Description
42 and 44 Church Street is a house that has been converted into two shops. It dates from the early 18th century and was refronted and altered in the early 19th century, with further changes made in the 20th century. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar in narrow courses and features a slate roof with a gable chimney stack on the right. It has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys tall over a basement, currently displaying three widely-spaced bays, though it was likely originally five bays.
The ground floor is now occupied by late 19th-century shop fronts, with the one for No.42 being remodelled in 1985. The upper floors feature windows with plain reveals, raised sills, and 9-pane sash windows.
Inside, the ground-floor back room of No.42 is fully panelled in hardwood, showcasing fluted pilasters, original doors, and raised and fielded panels above and below the dado rail. In No.44, the back room on the left of the ground floor also has full-height panelling with bolection moulding, which is now painted. The room above it is fully panelled above and below the dado rail, with panelled pilasters separating raised and fielded panels, all featuring bolection-moulded surrounds. The pilasters flanking the fireplace are fluted. Additionally, No.42 has an impressive dogleg staircase that rises from the cellar to the second floor, featuring square newel posts with raised and fielded panels, open strings with two turned balusters—alternately round and fluted—per tread, and a broad handrail.
