Description
The Royal Bank of Scotland, located at No. 2 New Street, was originally built around 1829 as the Amicable Society Library, designed by architect William Coulthart. The building has been altered in 1956 and features sandstone ashlar with a slate roof and a gable chimney stack on the right side of the Church Street elevation.
This bank and office building has a square plan situated on a corner site, consisting of two storeys above cellars and seven bays arranged symmetrically. The design is "hinged" in the centre, with three bays facing New Street and three facing Church Street, while the central bay, which is slightly convex, contains the entrance and forms a canted corner. The ground floor showcases banded rustication above a plinth, and the first floor is defined by simple pilasters. The ground-floor windows have been lowered to the plinth and feature late 20th-century joinery. The first-floor windows are 15-pane sashes with plain reveals, except for the window above the entrance, which has a moulded architrave, a projecting sill, and a simple cornice. The doorway is framed by plain reveals and features panelled double doors topped by a large overlight.
Additionally, a Victorian cast-iron letter box is incorporated into the right-hand end of the Church Street facade.
