Description
No. 8 New Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It was built in the mid-18th century and has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is made of sandstone ashlar and features a slate roof. It has a double-depth plan with the staircase located at the original back on the right side and a large full-width rear extension added later. The structure stands three storeys tall, above a cellar, and has three bays. Notable architectural details include rusticated chamfered quoins and a projecting eaves cornice. The ground floor now features a mid-20th century shop front. The upper windows have slightly projecting surrounds with triple keystones and Victorian 4-pane sash windows. A rocking horse, placed in front of the first-floor central window, dates from around 1987 and is the third to serve as the shop's sign. Inside, the original staircase above the first half-landing is dogleg in form, featuring an open string and carved brackets, with three column-on-vase balusters per tread leading up to the second floor and two per tread up to the attic. New Street was developed starting in 1748, and this house is likely one of the first built on the street.
