Description
No. 54 Church Street is a building that originally comprised two houses, now functioning as a shop. It dates from the early 18th century and has been altered in the 20th century. The structure is made of painted sandstone rubble that is rendered and lined, with ashlar dressings. It features a slate roof with a gable chimney stack located on the right side.
The building has a double-depth plan, standing three storeys above a cellar, and consists of four bays. The right side has chamfered quoins, and the doorway is situated in the second bay. There is a recent band above the shop front and a prominent eaves cornice. All openings are framed with moulded architraves, and the windows have glazing bar sashes that were restored in the late 20th century, featuring 18 panes on the first floor and 12 panes on the second.
The shop front has been altered but maintains some original features: the doorway is original with a moulded architrave, the window to the left is mostly original but has had its sill lowered to ground level, and the tripartite window with square mullions on the right is a recent addition.
At the rear, there is a gabled wall that rises four storeys, including the basement. This section has a doorway with a chamfered surround of 17th-century style and a small blocked window on the right with a double chamfered surround. Most windows on the upper floors, including a tall staircase window on the right, have architraves that match those on the front.
