Description
No. 40 Wheelgate is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the early 18th century or possibly earlier, with later alterations. The front is made of dressed stone, while the rear features orange-red brick and a wing of rubble stone. The building has coped gables and vestigial kneelers on a pantile roof, topped with a tall brick chimney at the right end.
It is two storeys high with an attic and has a two-window front. The shop front includes a half-glazed and panelled door with an overlight, positioned to the left of a replacement 20th-century canted bay window that sits on a brick riser, and the shop window has a half-hipped roof. To the left, there is a passage entry with an elliptical arch made of voussoirs.
On the first floor, the windows are single-pane sashes with painted stone sills and flat arches of voussoirs. There is a flat-topped dormer featuring a 2x6-pane casement window. At the rear end of the passage, there is a section of 17th-century carved wainscotting that has been incorporated into the ceiling near the doorway.
