Description

No. 1 St Michael Street is a shop with origins in the 18th century, which was remodelled in the late 19th century. The building is rendered and features a brick corbel eaves course on the Wheelgate front, with pantile roofs that include a coped gable and a shaped kneeler to the right of the Wheelgate front. There are brick ridge stacks on the St Michael Street range and at the left end of the Wheelgate range. The shop entrance is located on Wheelgate.

The St Michael Street front has a gable wall that rises two storeys and includes an attic to the left, with a two-storey, three-window range to the right. The right end features paired part-glazed doors. The remainder of the ground floor is occupied by the return of the Wheelgate shopfront. On the first floor, there are paired casements at the left end, and two 16-pane sashes flanking a 12-pane sash at the right end. All sashes have cambered heads and incised wedge lintels, and there is a small 4-pane attic sash in the gable end.

The Wheelgate front is two storeys high with two windows. It features a late 19th-century double shopfront situated between grooved pilasters with enriched imposts, a fascia, and a moulded cornice on grooved consoles. The shopfront includes glazed double doors with a louvred overlight, recessed between square bay plate-glass windows that have slim glazing bars. The first-floor windows are two-light casements with incised wedge lintels.
