Description
31 and 33 Wheelgate are two houses that now serve as a house and offices. They date from the early 19th century, possibly with earlier origins, and underwent alterations in the late 19th century. The buildings are constructed of painted brick in English garden-wall bond, sitting on a painted stone plinth at the front. The left side is made of coursed rubble stone, which has been overbuilt in orange-red brick in English garden-wall bond.
The houses feature timber doorcases with coped gables and shaped kneelers, topped by a pantile roof with brick end and centre stacks. The front is three stories high with four windows. There are paired doorcases with plain pilasters and moulded console cornice hoods that contain six-panel doors with overlights.
On the ground floor of No.31, there are two single-pane sashes, while No.33 has one four-pane sash. The first-floor window above the door to No.33 is a 12-pane sash, and the other first-floor windows are 16-pane sashes. The second-floor windows are unequal nine-pane sashes. The ground- and first-floor windows have painted wedge lintels, and all windows are fitted with painted stone sills.
