Description
40 and 42 Market Place is a house that has been converted into a shop, dating from the late 18th century with some alterations from the 19th century. The building is constructed of painted brick in stretcher bond and features a moulded timber eaves cornice, with brick stacks located at the right end and left of centre, supporting a pantile roof. It stands three storeys tall with an attic and has a three-window front.
The ground floor includes a double shop front and a single shop window. The shop front is framed by paired pilasters, with a half-glazed door set back between canted plate-glass windows. To the left, there is a single plate-glass shop window in a plain surround. The first-floor windows consist of 16-pane sashes, with the left window being tripartite between two 4-pane sashes, all featuring painted wedge lintels. In the centre of the second floor, there is an inserted 8-pane light with a painted stone sill. The attic includes two gabled dormers, each with large-pane windows. Inside, there is a cast-iron column located in the corner of the shop window to the left of the shop door.
