Description

The building comprises two houses, numbers 36 and 38 Market Place, now combined into a single shop, with an attached property at number 10 St Michael Street. Number 36 dates to the 18th century, number 38 to the early 19th century, with later alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Number 36 has a rendered and painted facade, while number 38 is constructed of painted brick in a Flemish bond pattern, featuring a moulded timber eaves course. Both have been re-roofed with pantiles and have brick stacks located at the right end and centre of number 36, and at the right end of number 38. Number 38 includes a coped gable with a shaped kneeler. It is two storeys and an attic in height, with a two-window front. A secondary entrance is located at the right end, leading into number 10 St Michael Street. The ground floor of number 36 contains a double shop front with a central altered door that is now a window, and a single window to the left. The double shop front features fluted pilasters, a plain fascia, and a moulded cornice resting on paired grooved consoles which rise to form a small central pediment. The single shop window is framed by pilasters with imposts and a stepped cornice. Both shop windows contain roller blind boxes by J Dean of Putney. The first-floor windows are four-pane sashes, with a painted stone sill for the left window. An attic dormer features an unequal nine-pane sash.

Number 38, a three-storey, two-window fronted building, has an early 20th-century double shop front with panelled pilasters, a deep fascia, and a cornice. A glazed and panelled shop door is recessed between canted plate-glass windows with transom lights and slim glazing bars; the shop front includes a complete blind box with fittings. The first-floor window on the right is a tripartite sash with a four-pane centre light and a painted stone sill, while a four-pane sash is located to the left. The second-floor windows are squat eight-pane casements with painted sills. The first and second-floor windows are set within keyed flat arches.

Number 10 St Michael Street is an early 19th-century house and shop, now a cafe, with later 19th and 20th-century alterations. It is rendered and colourwashed with a slate roof, hipped over a canted corner, with a brick stack on the front facing Market Place. The St Michael Street front has two storeys and three windows, featuring a central half-glazed and panelled door with an overlight; a single-light pivoting window is located to the right. A large plate-glass shop window occupies the left side. The first floor has four-pane sashes with painted stone sills. The Market Place front has two storeys and two windows, including a large plate-glass shop window on the ground floor. A recessed four-panel door with a narrow overlight and a blocked window above belong to number 36, and are located at the left end. The first floor has four-pane sashes with painted stone sills and incised wedge lintels. A disused glazed door with an overlight is situated in the canted corner between the two fronts, and includes wrought-iron corner scrolls on the roof.
