Description
57 and 57A Market Place is a shop and offices, likely built in the late 18th century, with significant alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries. The front is covered in painted render that mimics ashlar stone, while the rear is made of mottled red brick laid in English bond. There is a brick stack on the left end of the building, and it has a pantile roof. The structure is two stories with an attic and features a two-window front. The shop front includes Ionic pilasters and an entablature with a moulded cornice, and there are recessed glazed doors on either side of a three-light window that has colonnette glazing bars and a sunk panelled riser. Narrow single-light fixed windows with keyed raised surrounds are located on either side of the shop front. The first-floor windows are four-pane sashes with painted stone sills, set in shallow raised shouldered surrounds. There is a modillion eaves course, and two-light gabled dormers in the attic feature large-pane casement windows. At the rear, there are two first-floor windows beneath brick cambered arches. This building is included for its group value only.
