Description
47 and 49 Market Place is a shop that has been converted into a newspaper office, dating from the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of red brick in English garden-wall bond, set on a painted stone plinth, with painted stone dressings and rubble stone at the rear. It features a pantile roof with brick stacks; the central stack has a cogged brick cornice, while the end stacks are truncated.
The structure is two storeys with an attic and has a one-window gable front. The entrance is located in the canted right corner, featuring a double shop front that extends to the right return. The shop front includes fluted panelled pilasters with moulded imposts and paired fluted brackets beneath an entablature and projecting dentil cornice. The entrance has a half-glazed and panelled door with a blocked overlight, flanked by plate-glass windows set over stone risers.
On the first and attic floors, there are 4-pane sash windows with flat arches; the attic window is topped with a flat hood of moulded brick. A painted band and cogged brick string course adorn the attic, while the gable end features a cogged brick string course and a raised band of brick on stepped corbels.
On the right return, the building has a basement and is also two storeys with an attic, presenting a four-window front. There is a 4-panel door with an overlight to the right of centre, accompanied by a narrow sash window to the left and a further 4-pane sash window to the left of that. The left end has a shop front return. To the right of the door, there is a single shop front with plain pilasters on tall bases, topped with a shallow dentil cornice hood on paired brackets, featuring a plate glass window with a painted stone sill over an arched basement opening that is now blocked. The first floor has three 4-pane sashes and an altered former sash above the door. The attic includes three inserted casement windows, and the detailing of the attic band and eaves mirrors that of the gable end.
