Description
No. 53 Market Place is a shop and office building dating from the late 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The front facing Market Place features colour-washed render that has been incised to resemble ashlar, while the rear is constructed of dark brick and has been largely rebuilt. The building has a pantile roof with a coped gable and stands three stories high with a one-window gabled front.
The entrance is located in a canted corner to the left, featuring a double shop front that extends into the left return. The shop front is adorned with reeded pilasters, an entablature, and a dentil cornice. It includes a half-glazed and panelled door situated between three-light canted bay windows. On the first floor, there is a 19th-century twelve-pane sash window, and on the second floor, a similar 18th-century window, both of which have painted keyed wedge lintels and stone sills.
The left return displays a three-story, two-window front, where all windows, except for the shop window, are twelve-pane sashes with painted keyed wedge lintels and stone sills. The rear of the building reveals an exposed cross beam and truncated first-floor joists, which create a jetty over the rebuilt ground floor wall.
