Description

28 Market Place is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the late 17th century, with extensions added in the 18th and 19th centuries, and was subdivided in the 19th century. The original layout was likely a lobby-entry plan, with additional wings at the rear. The front is made of orange-red brick in an irregular bond, featuring a pulvinated eaves cornice of moulded brick, while the rear is constructed of rendered rubble stone, with the added wings made of brick. The building has a brick central stack and a pantile roof.

The front of the building is two stories high with four windows. The 20th-century shop front includes panelled pilasters and a cornice, with the shop door located towards the right end. There is a board passage door with an overlight at the far right. The first-floor windows on the left are four-pane sashes, while those on the right are cross-windows, all featuring painted stone and moulded brick sills, as well as flat arches. A blocked bullseye window is located in the center.

Inside, at the rear of the right half of the house, there is a close-string staircase in what is likely its original position. This staircase has square newels and a moulded handrail, with bulbous balusters exposed on the first-floor landing, although the rest of the balustrade is boarded in. In the rear passage entry, quarter-round moulded joists with wide boards can be seen, and there are 18th-century floorboards on the first floor.
