Description

No. 55 Market Place is a hairdresser's shop that dates from the 19th century, likely with earlier origins, and has undergone some alterations in the 20th century. The building features painted brick in stretcher bond on a painted rendered ground floor, which is grooved to resemble rustication. It has a pink and cream mottled brick stack and a pantile roof.

The shop has a three-storey, one-window front with a gabled facade facing the street. The shop front is plain with pilasters and a shallow cornice. To the left of the three-light canted window is a half-glazed and panelled door beneath a fanlight. The first-floor window is a four-pane sash set beneath a cambered arch, while the second-floor window is a two-light large-pane sliding sash. Both windows have painted sills and louvred shutters.

On the left side, the building has a three-storey, two-window front, with the first floor jettied on stepped brick corbels. There is a part-glazed and panelled door in the centre, with a four-pane sash window to the left and two former openings to the right that are now blocked. On the first floor, there is a small inserted window above the door, positioned between a top-hung small-pane window to the left and a four-pane sash with louvred shutters to the right. The second floor features a two-light large-pane sliding sash window. The building is included for its group value.
