Description

59 and 61 Market Place is a shop and office building dating from the early 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The front is constructed of painted brick in Flemish bond, while the rear and right side are made of red brick. It features a painted stone plinth with brick and stone steps. The building has painted raised chamfered quoins and dressings, along with a moulded timber eaves cornice supported by consoles that return at each end. The gables are coped with shaped kneelers, and there are brick stacks on either end of the double span pantile roof.

The building has a central-entry double-depth plan, with a basement, three storeys, and an attic, and a three-window front. There are three steps leading up to a part-glazed door with a patterned overlight, framed by a plain doorcase with a cornice hood. On each side of the door, there are enlarged tripartite windows with square pane glazing. The first floor features 12-pane sash windows, while the second floor has unequal 9-pane sash windows, all set in plain raised surrounds with stone sills. In the attic, there are two gabled dormers with 9-pane windows.

At the rear, the building has three storeys and three windows. The ground floor is obscured by a roofed-in yard. The first and second floors retain original 12-pane and 9-pane sashes on the right side, while other windows have been replaced with 4-pane sashes. All windows have flat arches made of gauged brick with stone keyblocks. The right return has paired gable walls, each three storeys high with one window. The front range includes a glazed shop door with a patterned overlight to the left of a 19th-century four-pane sash, though the first and second floor windows have been blocked. The rear range features a six-panel door to the right of a 20th-century window, with 12-pane and 9-pane sashes on the first and second floors, respectively. All openings, except for the later windows, including those that are now blocked, have flat arches of gauged brick with stone keyblocks.
