Description
This building at 6 St Michael Street in Malton is a house and shop dating from the early 19th century, with some alterations made in the late 19th century. It is constructed of coursed dressed sandstone and features a slate roof with brick stacks at the right end and left rear. The layout includes a central stairhall plan with a rear wing.
The front of the building is two stories high and has three windows. The left-of-centre entrance is a four-panelled front door with an overlight, accompanied by a 16-pane sash window further to the left. On the right side, there is a single shopfront with plain pilasters and a cornice, which includes a half-glazed and panelled shop door with an overlight, as well as a two-light shop window that has a moulded glazing bar and a canopy blind box. The first floor features 16-pane sash windows, and all openings have flat arches made of voussoirs, with painted stone sills beneath the sash windows.
At the rear, there is a one-storey outshut, and the first-floor windows are two-light 16-pane sliding sashes. Inside, there is a dogleg staircase with stick balusters, a moulded handrail, and a turned newel. The original shop fittings are still present in the shop area.
