Description
No. 12 Church Street is a shop with a dwelling above, now functioning as a shop with storage. It dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century and has been altered over time. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with sandstone dressings and features a slate roof with red ridge tiles. It has a double-depth plan with a courtyard entry on the left side.
The structure is three storeys high and has three windows. The ground floor has a pilastered 19th-century shop front that has been altered, with the fascia now covered by a 20th-century sign board, except for a lead-clad cornice. To the left of the shop front, there is a semi-elliptical arched wagon entry with stone jambs, a gauged brick head, and wooden double doors that open into recesses. A cobbled pathway with stone-flagged wagon tracks is present in this area.
On the first floor, there are 16-pane sashed windows with wedge lintels, while the second floor features square 12-pane sashes (8+4 panes), with their heads beneath a moulded gutter cornice. At the rear, there is a short back extension to the main range, which includes loading doors on the first and second floors next to the entry, and two 12-pane sashes on the second floor similar to those at the front. However, the rear is mostly obscured by 20th-century extensions.
