Description

The building at 2 Church Street, Ormskirk, is a town hall, later converted into a shop with offices. It dates from 1779, as indicated by the rainwater head. It is constructed with roughcast render over brick, and has a tiled roof. The building has a rectangular plan, oriented at right angles to the street. The front facade is two windows wide and three stories high, topped with a pediment. A 20th-century shop front occupies the ground floor. The two upper floors each contain two widely-spaced 19th-century windows, all with altered glazing. The pediment features a large painted coat of arms depicting a griffin and unicorn. To the left of the pediment is a decorated lead rainwater head, bearing the raised lettering "E D" (for Earl of Derby) and the date "1779." The interior was altered in the 19th century and subsequently.
