Description
46 and 48 Church Street is a pair of houses that have been converted into a single shop. They date from the mid-18th century and have been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof with gable chimney stacks that have brick caps. It has a double-depth plan that extends to the rear and stands three storeys high over cellars, with four bays. The upper floors have chamfered quoins and an eaves cornice.
The ground floor was modified around 1990 and now features a timber shop front with a cornice and glazed doorways on either side. The upper floor windows have raised plain surrounds, and the lintels of the second-floor windows are connected to a band that forms the frieze of the eaves cornice. It appears that the surrounds have been enlarged by lowering their sills, and the windows themselves are glazing bar sashes that were inserted around 1990. Inside, the dogleg open-stringed staircase between the front and back rooms of No. 48 remains between the first and second floors.
