Description
13 and 13A Galgate is a shop and flat, originally a cinema, located in Barnard Castle. It dates from the late 19th century and was altered in the early 20th century. The building is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings, and features a brick gable on the right side. The roof is made of Welsh slate and has yellow brick chimneys.
The structure is two storeys tall and has a three-window range. There is a six-panel door with a plain overlight to the right, set under a flat stone lintel. The shop front and former cinema entrance are framed by plain pilasters with curved brackets and block finials supporting a high fascia. The shop on the left has a central recessed glazed door, while the cinema entrance on the right is flanked by Tuscan columns in antis, which are likely reused, and features 1960s glazed blocking with a glazed door.
On the first floor, the windows have flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills, with the outer windows paired and the central window featuring two lights in the upper sash. The roof has corniced chimneys positioned mid-slope at the rear. Inside, the former cinema, now used as an auction room, includes a plain rear gallery with a projection box.
