Description
The Pant, or drinking fountain, is a structure dated 1874 located in Barnard Castle. It is built from sandstone, featuring pink sandstone nook-shafts, and is designed in the Gothic Revival style. The pant has a square plan and includes a moulded plinth with broken drinking troughs that project from the north and south supports. It features four pointed arches with wide stop-chamfered double chamfers. Within these arches, there is a square base that once supported a drinking fountain, which has moulded side panels. The nook-shafts between the arches are topped with stiff-leaf capitals. High gables above the arches are adorned with nailhead moulding and foliage stops, culminating in a central square base that may have held a lamp. The date 1874 is inscribed on the south gable. In June 1991, the local District Council undertook rebuilding and restoration work on the structure.
