Description
19 and 19A Galgate is a house that has been converted into a garage and flat, likely built around 1760 with alterations made in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed from coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings, topped with a roof of thin stone slates featuring stone gable coping and a stone chimney. It stands two storeys high and has a three-window range.
On the ground floor, there is a renewed glazed door with an overlight on the right, set beneath a flat stone lintel, and a wide vehicle entrance on the left. The shop front, added around 1960, features a full-width fascia. The first floor has three sash windows with glazing bars, each with flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills. Above, there is an eaves parapet with flat stone coping and a moulded gutter cornice, along with a moulded rain-water head positioned between the second and third windows. The roof is fitted with central and right end ridge chimneys that have plinths and bands. This building may have originally served as a service wing for No. 21, Startforth House.
