Description
No. 5 South Square is a house that has been converted into offices. It dates from the mid-17th century and was altered in the 19th century. The exterior features painted render with rusticated painted stone quoins, a plinth, and a first-floor band. The roof is slate and hipped to the right, with 19th-century gable and wall stacks made of Gault brick. The building has a parallel range plan.
The exterior is two storeys plus attics and has a five-bay front with a dentilled stone cornice, a plain parapet, and stone coping. The central entrance features a six-panel door with a bordered overlight and glazed lamps, set within a panelled doorcase that has a plain frieze and a moulded cornice supported by Roman Doric half-columns. The entrance is flanked by pairs of plain sash windows. On the first floor, there are five small glazing bar sash windows. The windows have flat heads, with those on the ground floor featuring keystones. The roof includes three glazing bar sash dormers with lead segmental heads.
Inside, the building retains some original panelling and a decorated plaster ceiling in the left-hand front room.
