Description
The lychgate to the Church of St Stephen, dated 1882, is constructed from dark-stained hardwood on a base of brick with stone copings. It features a plain tiled roof with the ridge aligned north-south. Both the north and south sides have a moulded depressed ogee arch that rises from the side posts, with open Perpendicular tracery filling the gable and decorative bargeboards. On the south side, the tie beam is inscribed with 'ST. STEPHEN'S CHURCH', while the bargeboards carry the inscription: 'I WAS GLAD WHEN THEY SAID UNTO ME WE WILL GO INTO THE HOUSE OF THE LORD'. The north side's bargeboards are inscribed: 'ERECTED AD 1882 IN MEMORY OF HENRY HALE'. Wicket gates are hung from the side walls. This lychgate is included for its group value as an integral part of the Church of St Stephen.
