Description

The war memorial in Acomb, York, was built around 1920 and underwent alterations after the Second World War, with restoration completed in the late 20th century. It is constructed from limestone ashlar. On the west side, the memorial features a Latin cross, which is carved with a wreath and dove at the center of the cross head. The upper part of the octagonal base is adorned with symbolic carvings, including shields and military trophies. Below this, there are carved tablets listing the names of those who died in the First World War, which were restored in the late 20th century. Additionally, on the west side of the octagonal steps, there is a carving of an open book that is inscribed with the names of those who died in the Second World War.
